...on preaching (though equally applied to any public speaking)
So, I've finally preached my first 'proper' sermon!
Yes, I've done youth talks, men's breakfasts, housegroups etc but until Sunday evening I'd never preached in a proper church service.
Those of you who know me will know that I don't suffer from a lack of confidence. It doesn't bother me standing up front by myself in front of hundreds of people. Indeed, I am giving a presentation in a few weeks time at a conference for anything up to 200 people, it's just not something I struggle with. But it did feel a little strange standing in front of just 30 (maybe) people on Sunday evening. I wasn't nervous, and afterwards one of our Elders said I looked very confident, but I had this funny feeling that people were really looking at me. As I tried to make eye contact with various people in the room throughout the talk, I felt like they were expecting me to say something that would absolutely transform their lives! Like their whole world's depended on what I said.
Is that how it comes across to other preachers?
Or, it it just that that particular group of people were all really attentive listeners and really interested in what I had to say (can't believe that's right!!)?
Or, is it just how it felt to me?
Anyone got any experience or comments on this?
